Using the very same high quality Japanese Low Resin 40t Carbon and with full 1k weave, the H-‘S’ Spod rods and SPMs exactly match the build of the carp rods. As we use the same material the blanks are kept as slim and as light as possible but still with plenty of action to aid the casting of even the smallest spods and other baiting devices.
Having a very low resin content means there is no perceptible softening of the blanks – very important to preserve the performance of these rods since they are cast repeatedly with heavy loads.
As with all Free Spirit rods they are built on the spine which helps ensure they cast more accurately and last longer.
The Hi-‘S’ Spod Rods are a little heavier in action to the SPM so that larger payloads can be cast with ease. These are more suitable for the use of the middle to large sizes although the tip is still relatively slim and responsive. These rods feature the Clone reel seat in 1k and ‘S’-Lite guides, stainless steel collars and butt caps as standard and are available in 12’ & 13’. The effective test curve is around 4½lb.
Since it is quite popular to carry more than one Spod or SPM rod these have depth marks so can be used for marker work too.
The Hi-‘S’ SPM blank is the very same blank we used to sell badged Hi-‘S’ SpombTM Rod. Being friends of Bryan and Judith Houghton we were granted a licence to use the name SpombTM. To achieve this action of making a very responsive tip that could turn over quicker was important to propel this device straight and without wobble – meaning longer and more accurate casts. This softer, more responsive tip also makes casting smaller bait-up devices much easier and makes for an excellent marker rod – the ‘M’ in SPM. Having achieved this feat we would not change a blank that was so trickly to develop in the first place. The decision to re-badge these rods to SPM was solely the result of Bryan and Judith selling the company and us deciding we no longer wanted to pay a royalty to a competitor.
All these rods are Hand Built in the UK and can be customised and will shortly be available as Black Editions.

Blank and rod weights may vary slightly from those quoted. We use stainless steel collars and butt caps for durability which will add a little to the rod’s overall weight but being on the handle should not adversely affect its balance.
The Hi-‘S’ SPM (formerly the Spomb™ Rod) have faster, more responsive tips to help turn over spods and other baiting devices more quickly to help them launch straighter and therefore gain both distance and accuracy. It also helps accuracy when baiting up at shorter ranges since the rod can still be adequately compressed.
